Drew Ratner MD, MBA

Drew Ratner MD, MBA is Board Certified orthopedic surgeon and founder of American Orthopedics in the Upstate (South Carolina). American Orthopedics is one of the only independent orthopedic practices in South Carolina, which is an area that has become dominated by hospital owned practices. He founded this group in order to provide the most innovative, personalized, and patient centered orthopedic practice in the area. Being 100% physician-owned gives him the ability to run the practice in the most effective and efficient way without the typical bureaucracy that physicians encounter in today's healthcare marketplace which is mainly run by hospital systems with layers of administration.

Dr. Ratner grew up in Dallas, Texas. He attended Northwestern University on a soccer scholarship. While at Northwestern, he was a three-year starter and two-year captain of the soccer team, which finished in the top 25 all three of those years and went to two NCAA Elite Eights during his time there. He graduated in 2008 with a degree in psychology.

Dr. Ratner received his medical degree from Texas Tech School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas. He concomitantly obtained an MBA with a concentration in Health Organization Management from Texas Tech Rawls College of Business.

In 2018, Dr. Ratner completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the Greenville Health System in Greenville, South Carolina. In Greenville, he received extensive training in orthopedic trauma at a busy Level I Trauma Center. He also trained in hip, shoulder, and knee replacement surgery at a total joint center of excellence. Dr. Ratner also completed sports medicine training, including arthroscopic knee, elbow, and shoulder surgery, at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of Carolinas and Blue Ridge Orthopedics Seneca.

Finally, Dr. Ratner completed an additional year of training as a sports medicine fellow at the UC Health Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver, Colorado. During his fellowship, he served as assistant team physician to Dr. Martin Boublik for the Denver Broncos and to Dr. Tom Noonan for the Colorado Rockies. While in Denver, he received additional specialty training in arthroscopic procedures for the knee & shoulder.

Dr. Ratner took his first job out of training working for the Texas Bone & Joint, which is an orthopedic group owned by HCA in the northern suburbs of Dallas. He moved to the back to the Upstate in 2021 where he worked for Blue Ridge Orthopedics in Easley which is associated with the Prisma Hospital System.

Dr. Ratner has been in practice for 6 years, and he specializes in sports medicine, joint arthroplasty, and fracture care. Since being in practice, he has continued to focus on all sports medicine injuries, including complex arthroscopic and open shoulder procedures. Additionally, he performs all arthroscopic surgeries within the knee. He has spent time learning anterior hip replacement from several different preeminent hip surgeons around the country. All of his primary hip replacements are done from anterior approach, which allows for a quicker recovery and more stable and accurate placement of components. He also performs all of his knee replacements using robotic technology which allows for much more accurate, precise, and predictable positioning of implants. Finally, he performs many anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacements depending on a patient's specific needs.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Ratner enjoys snowboarding, mountain and road biking, and competing in triathlons and marathons. He has completed several half Ironman triathlons and qualified for and ran in the 2012 Boston Marathon. His wife, Lizzie, is a nurse practitioner, and they have three children - Rosie, Mary Margaret, and Jack.
